The Other View

Issue No.7 Winter 2001

Overview

The Other View began publication two years ago as an educational exercise. The thirty-year conflict has created polarisation between communities, preventing any understanding between mindsets of other communities. The recent transformations in Northern Ireland society, has arguably, opened up avenues of dialogue and communication. It is hoped that The Other View can provide a frank and open forum for those who are anxious and willing to discuss the issues that have divided communities for so long and indeed to focus on our commonalties.
The magazine has been received with mixed criticism over its period of publication. Those who welcome the project believe that the magazine can bring together former enemies to address the broad range of issues that for so long has been the cause of conflict and division between the two communities.

In this current issue, some contributors have focussed their articles on the issue of human rights. By setting this theme, we hope to present viewpoints on various human rights matters from those who are involved in the current debate, as well as reporting on some of the changes that we are experiencing which concern human rights, such as education for children, social and economic matters and a focus on the forthcoming Human Rights Bill for Northern Ireland.

The editorial board is currently in the process of updating its website where previous articles will be made available. It is hoped that readers can interact and contribute their own views or comments on issues highlighted in The Other View.

The editorial board is delighted to present the seventh edition of the magazine and wish to take this opportunity to thank all our contributors and the magazines sponsors, Co-operation Ireland. The next edition will duly appear in the New Year and the editorial board aims to maintain the standard of journalism now well established and promote the ethos of The Other View in providing a platform for frank, friendly and probing dialogue.
We would also like to wish our readers a happy Christmas and peaceful new year
