Issue No.6 Autumn 2001 Overview This latest copy of The Other
View continues its well-established tradition of presenting diversity of views
and opinions on issues that impact on the social, economic, cultural and
political life both north and south of the island. The sixth edition carries articles
from a wide range of contributors, which reflects the increasing interest and
influence the magazine has generated since the first edition was produced in May
of last year. Those involved in the project can
genuinely claim a sense of accomplishment and achievement. Standards and ethos
have been maintained. The Other View remains a unique forum for frank and open
debate and discussion on issues as diverse as public transport, globalisation,
tourism and investment, child victims and the workings of the North/South
council. The progress up-date on the Ulster
Canal is of particular interest and satisfaction to the editorial board as this
was an issue of primary focus in a recent edition.at a time when the already
beleaguered tourist industry is being dealt a sequence of serious blows the
restoration of the canal further emphasises the practicality of cross-border
co-operation and pooling of resources. There are reviews on two important
publications. Billy Mitchell's review of Roy Garland's biography Gusty Spence
provides further insights to the persona of a man whose prolonged political and
ideological evolution is enough material for another edition. Gusty Spence is a
timely work when Loyalism is experiencing rapid fragmentation and appears to
have lost a sense of focus and direction. Republican Voices by Kevin Bean and
Mark Hayes is reviewed by Dr Terry Robson. Republican Voices, says Dr Robson,
should be required reading for all members of the republican family and for
students who wish to gain unique insights to the diversity of trends in current
republican thinking. The Other View continues, of course,
with the support of Co-operation Ireland, a fact that endorses its ethos and the
efforts of those who work hard to provide copy and produce the final product. |
