Issue No.2 Autumn 2000 Joey Dunlop 1952 – 2000 Not everybody enjoys motorcycle racing and only a minority of people in these parts would know the names of the stars of that dangerous sport. Everybody, however, knew the name of Joey Dunlop and even those of us who wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a Honda and a haddock, felt affection for the man from County Antrim. Many people have little interest for speed racing yet still harbour an admiration for the nerve and courage not to mention skill of the men who ride the two-wheeled machines. In the end of the day though it was the fact that in spite of all his success on the international sporting scene, Joey Dunlop remained very much a country man from a country town with the pride and self confidence to speak with the fine accent of his native home. We may never see his like again.
